To the many who replied:

The refraction from the heat really does make sense now that you guys
mention it. The shadows I mentioned do have a 'heat wavy' appearence. I can
ignite wood with my coil in a short amount of time. Tesla coil streamers are
quite hot in spite of their dull appearence.
