That picture is actually quite old.. It was in National Geographic several 
years ago. However, you are right it is quite impressive.  Even more 
impressive is the array of Marx banks that feed the center reaction vessel 
through an array of transmission lines. What you see in the photo is a mere 
side effect... It's also taken by remote control because the Xray emission 
is fierce.

Of a somewhat incidental connection to tesla coiling is that I understand 
they are refurbishing the Z machine with new capacitors, and the old ones 
will likely show up (if they haven't already) on the surplus market. A bit 
big for TCs, unless you want to derate them for filter caps on a DC supply, 
but there might also be other interesting surplus parts coming up.
