primary connection affecting output?

This sounds like an idiot question, but...
if your primary connection is poor (i'm not sure how to solder
it); its just pressing up against the wire and maybe twisted a little.
primary is 1/4" copper tubing and the connection to it is 6gauge stranded
pushed into the end.
I tried wrapping a helical primary with 12gauge stranded wire.
thought i'd get racing, but alas I was not as lucky. :)
powered by 12kv/60ma nsts and 12nf cap.
any ideas?
