spark gap wrt cap? parallel or serial?

i've seen two different ways to connect a spark gap (if i rememeber
correctly.)  essentially either in parallel or in series with the tank cap.  
I think i saw this on terry's filter testing docs.  One was more
stressful on the nst.  Does one provide any specific benefits that the other 
does not?

I think mine is in series.
