Greg,

I had the same problem with my large coil and I had to remove
the wire from that point down and decrease the coupling K. Once
I did this, the problem went away, so maybe try loosening the
primary/secondary coupling. In my case, it seemed to be more
a function of overvoltage between the turns than overcurrent in 
the secondary wire itself.
