Under the 500kv bus I could hold my hands up in the air and feel the hair
on my arms stand off the skin. So, I can imagine it does not take too much
for the birds to realize this is an "abnormal" environment.

Don't see many birds sitting on those transmission lines... They're all on 
the MV lines at <100 kV.  I'll bet the strong efield is unpleasant for them.
