Typically ignitrans ARE NOT good for tesla coil work.  The de-ionization
period (shut-off) of the tube is too slow for serious tesla work, however my
friend has got it working good enough to work with his 15kv/120mA 6" coil.
And it is very silent!!!!!

But again, most of the noise comes from the break-out of streamers (not the
spark gap) anyway.

Although most noise comes from the arc discharges, you can eliminate spark
gap noise by using a Iggy (Ignatron).  My friend
uses these instead of standard spark gap (rotary gaps) for his large coils
and runs the VERY SILENTLY at up to 10kVA input power.
