The disc with holes design comes up regularly on the list.
Generally it will tend to carbon track and not work reliably.
It's hard to control quench times mechanically. The times
in question tend to be too short in duration.
I like your idea of the air brake fittings. Can you suggest
a place to buy them or other source? Any web photos
available of the fittings?
