I agree, there are many minor unknowns to be tinkered with here.
I've already increased the gaps to 5 and there's improvement.
I'm fitting a fan to increase cooling / airflow.
My caps are probably very lossy and I'm going to replace them with Polyprop
ones.

What kind of main gap are you using? I would bet if you try a simple air
blast type you will see all of 26 inch and more!!
