Re: Outrageous Amps from MOT's??

Hi Ken,
I have also gotten some unbelievable secondary amps
from MOTs when measured with a DMM. I always
attributed the high numbers to waveform distortion
introducing inaccuracy into the DMM. Under heavy load,
MOTs distort badly as the shunts become
effective--doesn't look much like a sine wave anymore.
It would be interesting to short out the secondary of
a MOT with various values of buss fuse and see how big
of a fuse it can blow, or maybe even short out the MOT
with different wattages of tungsten light bulbs and
see how large of a bulb it can light to full
brightness. That might give a more realistic estimate
of the output current.
1/2" gap is a bit ambitious for a voltage doubled twin
MOT supply. We are only talking about 8kvac
open-circuit here--and even less under working Tesla
coil loads. My sucker gap is set to only about 0.15"
The twin MOT PSU voltage is a bit disappointing, but
my 4" x 24" coil performs just fine with the twin MOT
current.
Cheers,
