RE: MOT supply construction question

I mounted a 5"x5" piece of Plexiglas to each MOT, soldered leads to the MOT,
and brought the leads up vertically, supported by the plexi.
http://users.rcn-dot-com/tcobaugh/motpsu.htm (bottom of page, Dave
Hartwick--temporarily clip leaded together for initial testing)

Each MOT is oil immersed in a clean paint can. The goal of all this is to
allow for easy replacement of an MOT should one fail--modular design.
Probably overkill. The other guys are not doing this and don't seem to be
having problems. I've not heard of a single case of MOT core/winding arcing
when oil immersed--wait, maybe there was recent report. Forget who, but he
was using regular motor oil. I'm using transformer oil, as is Ted L in NZ. I
think Greg and Tim J are using non-detergent motor oil. I wonder how well
medical grade mineral oil works?

Ted L recommended thorough cleaning of the mots prior to immersion. Sounded
like a good idea--I did the same.

Also--the oil needs to thoroughly penetrate the MOT. I ran mine with
secondaries shorted at reduced power to heat the oil, thus reducing
viscosity, FWIW.

Hi Michael,
You may be able to use quick connects, but I've found they tend to slip off
very easily if you tug on the wire, and then it's very messy getting it back
out of the oil again - soldering is much more secure, although you'll
probably
need a soldering iron of at least 30W because there's so much thermal mass.
You can always just solder the quick connectors together, then heat them up
again if you ever need to remove them.
