This gas is nitrogen dioxide (NO2). It's the same gas that's given off
when you drop a piece of copper into concentrated nitric acid. It's a
nasty, heavier than air, brown colored gas that converts into nitric
acid upon contact with moisture (as in your lungs..). It has an acrid
odor, similar to bleach. And, it's very toxic to humans and other living
things. Concentrations of 400-500 parts/million or above are life
threatening. Needless to say, don't mess with it, especially when it's
concentrated (as in your bottle).
