most likely a mixture of nitrogen oxides - nitrogen dioxide is
reddish-brown, nitric oxide is clear, so maybe a cloud of both might be
orangey yellowy.

nitrogen dioxide is particularly bad for sniffing incidentally - it's toxic
and damages lung tissue - probably by dissolving into fluid on mucous
membranes and making nitrous or nitric acid.  Hence the sharp smell, I
guess.
