Hello Jolyon, Coilers,
What you suggest was also known as the "basket weave" style of coil and if
you're looking to reduce the self capacity you would use an un-even number
of supports or formers. That way, alternating turns are wound inside and
outside of any given support thus reducing the contact to just the points
where the wires cross between the supports.
