Jolyon,

It's not actually short circuiting the output. What looks like a closed 
loop is actually an illusion. Both loops are open ended... you can see the 
open end of one loop, but the open end of the other loop is hidden behind 
the other output terminal, making it look like a closed loop short is 
circuiting the output of the transformer. Faked me out the first time I saw 
it as well...  :^)
