Spacing them out would do no good, for the reason I gave in the first
reply: Then the gap will not be able to fire at lower voltages, like the
ones you use while fine tuning the coil.
If, however, you insist on bringing the electrodes into alignment at
firing, (and a good reason for this would be the symmetrical wear on the
tips that would follow) you need to incline the electrodes, so they
point towards the direction of rotation, like in this gap, designed by
Bill Wysock, for the biggest magnifier in the world,today, the TTR M13.
