The potential transformer is more hardy than the NST. An RC filter with
safety gaps still seems like worthwhile protection. After all, these things
were not designed to be used with Tesla Coils. I agree that safety gaps
should be the minimum required protection. They are simple and effective.
The output power at 14,400 KV and 180 mA is equivalent to 3 15/60 NSTs or 6
15/30 NSTs. The output power is 50% more than 120 mA. But that is not the
whole story. I am not sure why, but when I run my coil from the PT, it
looks better. Bigger, hotter sparks, than I get from the same power of
NSTs.
