Protection probably not required.
It would be a huge difference.  You could easily push these things up to
close to 5 kW output for short periods.

However, in my opinion, if you are going to spend $200.00 for a hardcore
transformer, might as well go for a pole transformer.  You can get 10kVA
pole transformers for under $200.00.
