Nice unit !
The off-axis inductance of the regulating coil reduces the coupling, 
but the coupling can be increased back to normal my lowering 
the secondary relative to the primary.  If one is critical about
these matters, one could devise an electro-mechanical system
which raises and lowers the secondary remotely and to the 
correct amount, as the regulating coil knob is turned, to keep
the coupling the same at all times.
