This is not necessarily true and it could get someone into trouble.  Just
because a book is published doesn't mean it is public domain.  Photographs
are covered by US copyright laws and if the author publishes the pictures on
the Internet specifically saying the photos cannot be copied without
permission, then that is enforceable in court.  The copyright laws were
written precisely for people who would like to share their creative talents
with others while retaining all the rights to their own work.
