Nolan,

did you try making the gap narrower?  Sometimes when the
NST's heat up, the voltage can't jump a wide gap.  If the gap is too
wide, sometimes the NST can be destroyed very quickly. 
Protective chokes can sometimes resonate and destroy
the NST.  I prefer not to use protective chokes with my NST's.
