Jolyon: the use of copper pipe square shaped  with solder joints would be
good for your plumbing supplier, but not good for a tesla coil. Each corner
would tend to radiate and arc making losses greater. Round corners of tubing
are  better. Square shape coils are used for lower voltage and etched board
coils. They are easy to layout in a proto type board with drafting tape. I
recomend  copper tubing with PVC pipe as spokes to pupport your coil.
