Cory,

You are confused.  OBIT = oil burner ignition transformer used in oil
burning furnaces.  Not something you will find in cars.

Cars use ignition coils, and the output is tens of kilovolts.  Ignition
coils are designed for 12 volt DC current limited input that is interrupted
at the proper time (by the points or a power transistor) when a high voltage
is needed by a spark plug.  You cannot get high voltage out of an ignition
coil if you feed it with a steady state alternating current of 12 to 18
volts.  Anything more will overheat the primary and can cause the coil to
squirt out oil or build up pressure and explode.

You can get good output if you discharge a capacitor, charged to a few
hundred volts, through the primary.  Some electronic ignitions do this,
using a silicon controlled rectifier to switch the charged capacitor into
the coil.  Coilers also do it by using a solid state lamp dimmer in series
with a 2 mF several hundred volt capacitor.  This is sometimes used to
trigger a spark gap.
