Isolation transformers are sometimes available on eBay. Often something
shows up which could be used for isolation if you have 220VAC available.
(480X240 to 240x120 for example. Could be wired as 240V each end and run on
120 at half the KVA) If you have the funds, you could check some
manufacturers for the price of a new one.

Hello all,
I dont know much about variacs so i was just wondering
if they isolate you from the mains? (if they were
shorted would it trip a breaker??^^...) If not, are
there any good sources for isolation transfomers on
the web???
