Depends on what one means by 'steam'. Real Steam is H2O vapor
and carries only H20.
How does it carry minerals?
(if NON evaporated water droplets are carried along:

Steam (properly so called...) is only water vapor. vapor.
(minerals do not go liquid at water vapor temperatures.)

Generic cautionary note on thermal depotting:
tar fires are NASTY. 'steam' has the advantage that it is cooler
than some things. other sources of dry heat are OK, but
think about sources of ignition if something goes wrong...
