Hi Matthew, All
On my MOT's I usually cut them short and put small wire nuts on 'em, but if
you want to remove them I suggest a sharp pair of wirecutters and cut all
the turns in half (there's usually only 10-15 turns). Then I use needlenose
pliers to peel the cut wire so it's shaped like a bunch of U's and pull it
out from the opposite side. Takes some doing, 'cause as I'm sure you've
seen, they dunk these things in a lacqer/poly/whatever to seal it up and
prevent buzzing. Sometimes it's easier to remove the heater windings if you
knock out the shunts first.
Just be careful not to nick the secondary! :))
