TC knowledge

I work at a childrens museum and we have a TC there and i would like to
understand it better. I understand that it takes a small voltage and makes it
into a big voltage (duh) but i would like to know how. Could someone explain it
to me in a way that i understand (and in a way i can explain it to kids and
parents)
