Nothing much would be gained by having a full spherical shape all
around, although it would be interesting to try a very large diameter such
as 1".  It would have good corona hold-off as you said, but as the
ball gets larger, the dwell time will tend to increase.  There's only so much
that can be done to improve a rotary gap, and other gaps.  We're
stuck with this old-fashioned technology for now, until Terry or someone
perfects a solid state switching method at a reasonable cost.
