hi Craig...

the first thing I would do is get a copy of WinTesla ...  

match ( or go a bit higher ) in the resonate rating of the cap to your 
power supply ( hi volt side)
stay away from home-made rolled caps ( they die too easily) do salt 
water bottle caps if you have to...  try to buy a MMC set if you can

make the primary about 5 turns larger than the math sez to do

use a small topload to start ( i used a coke can empty of course ;)   )

step 1... tap on the outer most turn of the primary and test...
step 2 ... move to the next inner turn and test ...
step 3 ... repeat step 2 till you get longest streamer length
