Sizing the tank cap to be mains-resonant with the NST secondary is a good
starting point, but nothing special happens so far as the performance
peaking there. The only "special" thing is that the hazard of over-volting
the cap and/or NST due to too-wide gap settings or missed RSG firings is
greatest when mains-resonant. But the same hazards exist to a lesser
degree when not precisely mains-resonant, so I don't think there's any
reason to avoid the condition. Just keep the safety gaps set correctly.

0.15uF/2000V caps. A 28-long string is good for at least 56kV, so I don't
think that's the problem. More likely a construction problem or something
unrelated to the cap.

Gary: do you want to be "mains resonant"? Yes you are correct the issue is
what is the voltage rating of the capacitors? Is he punching through his
capacitors by low rating and resonant peak voltage? we dont know.
