Frank,
I assume the caulking gun tube you are looking at is labeled polyurethane, not
polyurethan. There are many compounds of polyurethane that can be put into a 
caulking gun tube, including adhesives and a polyu foam. The material you 
want to use for coating a coil is polyurethane varnish. MinWax polyurethane 
varnish is excellent 
for that purpose and it's easily available. Apply 10-15 coats with a brush 
while the coil form rotates slowly
on your winder. That way you wont get any drips and the results is a smooth 
glasslike
finish.
