Billy,

I've heard the same thing from some old timers and new timers.
In reality, the output from tube coils tends to be weak, 
interference-wise, so I would just build the coil in the normal
fashion.  You're correct that such drivers as you mentioned 
tend to be inefficient.

Now if you're speaking about a spark gap TC, they can't use
a linear tube amp, or they wouldn't be a spark gap TC anymore.
In any case, they don't interfere much either.  So just built
your coil robustly and aggressively, and enjoy this great hobby.
There are a *vast* number of Tesla myths floating about out
there, but I'm happy to say that many have been bashed,
battered, and quashed.
