Yikes... that's pretty steep.  I can't imagine why the price would be
significantly higher than in the US. I would think the material cost and
labor costs to manufacture new or recondition old would be much the same as
in the US. It's not like there is some secret special technology that ITAR
regulations keep from your friendly local transformer servicer.
Transportation might be more pricey, and there might not be as big a supply
of old units (because the population is smaller in Australia, so there is
less supply to work from.)


Perhaps it's time to scout around and share a slab with some electric
company linemen to find out what other sources there might be.
