hmmm.. World's most expensive TC...

Wardenclyffe, perhaps, if one accounts for inflation?

Proabably the most significant difference between pro and amateur coils is
going to be that for the former, you pay directly for labor. I think that
even the most elaborate coil's material cost is going to be fairly low (say,
several thousand dollars). If you start paying for the labor it gets
expensive rapidly... In a way, buying retail instead of surplus is exactly
this. Retail, you pay directly for the manufacturing labor (hopefully
taking into account economies of scale), surplus, you donate your own labor
for free: scrounging in scrap yards, buying stuff of unknown provenance and
hoping it works, accumulating garages full of junk (at least that's what my
wife calls it).

However, if one uses some nominal figure for labor, say $25-50/hr (that's
the full up burdened cost, not just the number on the paycheck... Gotta add
20% for payroll taxes (FICA, unemployment,etc.) and another 30-40% for
benefits, and then some more for vacation time, etc. Realistically, skilled
engineers and technicians cost somewhere between $100K and $200K/yr. So, my
$25-50/hr (corresponding to $50K-100K burdened cost == $30k-$60k/yr salary)
