Low power tesla coils are very nice toys. I built two
tesla coils powered by ignition coils for frequencies
around 1.2- 1.4 Mhz. They are safe, you can play with,
no electrocution sensation when an arc jumps between
the topload and a rode in your hand. I used a 40 kV -at-
1 mA input. Because the ignition coils are drived with
a dimmer by mains, the input is formed by peaks of
high voltage, very short, so, I can't obtain longer
streamers. But I think that with a HV transformer the
things will be better. For a ~ 40 VA input power, I
think that 1.6" is the better secondary diameter. If
larger, I don't think that I'll obtain longer
sparks.....but I'm not a specialist.
