Bart,
Putting a piece of wire inside two pieces of tubing to form a splice is a 
method I have used. It may help to tin the piece of wire. You'll get better 
heat transfer. I prefer another splicing method
and that is to use a piece of 3/8 tubing over the 1/4 joint and then sweat 
solder
the joint. IMHO, a 100 W will be more useful than a propane torch.
