It's a voltage multiplier full of caps and diodes and perhaps some HV
resistors.  The power transformer and control console (which probably has a
hefty Variac in it) might be good for coiling.  Definitely a great gift for
the scientist who has (almost) everything!  Send the gift freight collect!
