Mark, Mark M.,

Careful. That's bring the filament voltage up to full voltage slowly
before applying the plate voltage. Not together. Always preheat the tube, and 
high amperage filaments should never be slammed on. Thoriated tungsten 
filaments 
need to be operated at their rated voltage. After the filaments have 
stabilized I would then
bring up the plate voltage from a separate variac on the plate transformer.
