Scot is correct, the core debris finds it's way into laminated variacs (not
all variacs are use
laminations - some use a composite). The laminated variacs on the ends will
tend to spring apart as
debris gets between the laminated sections as you cut. This can be a
problem, but can also be
minimized. Tighten ty-wraps around the ends of the area you plan to cut to
keep the laminations
together, cutting between the ty-wraps. This will minimize debris (some
will get in regardless).
After the core is cut, don't remove the ty-wraps. Add a plastic strip in
the cut slot then epoxy the
area (including ty-wraps) to prevent the core from coming apart and to
further stabilize the core.

Just some tips I found along the way (should anyone do this),
