Perhaps I didn't word my comments correctly. What I meant was that
I could vary the firing time in a range that roughly equalled 75%
of the MECHANICAL limits of the dimmer control. At both lower and
upper limits things got a bit flakey, but over most of the control
range it was quite stable and I could adjust the "timing" easily.
