I highly recommend that you go to the Telsa List archives at
www.pupman-dot-com and use the search function for "COCKROFT".
There are something like 53 messages about this including
detailed design information there ... very good reading.
Another great reference is Jim Lux's HV experimenter web pages:

Also, a search of Yahoo for +"Cockroft-Walton" currently gives
281 links with info and pictures and schematics,etc.
Cockroft multipliers are useful mostly for battery powered, smaller
teslacoils and Marx generators unless you are either lucky at finding
surplus parts or willing to put in a bit of hard cash for the critical
elements.
