Most drills aren't designed for 100% duty cycle. (the gear train is what
fails)
The speeds you need for a rotary SG are low enough that direct drive from a
convenient motor are just fine (1800 or 3600 RPM synchronous, usu modified
from a 1750 or 3450 induction motor)
