Jason,

The correct spacing depends on a number of factors such as
the input voltage, the break-rate, the capacitor size, type of
transformer, use of a fan or air blast, etc.

Sometimes it helps to use fewer than 7 segments, other times
more is better.  Again, there are so many factors.  A good deal
of trial and error adjustment is often helpful.  It can take awhile
to truly optimize a coil sometimes.  This is all part of the fun
and challenge of course.
