Call me evil but I like surface mount for these very reasons! Or if your a
true prototyping masochist try dead bug surface mount over copper clad(hint:
kapton tape is your friend!)
  In the long run a small batch of two layer boards from
http://www.apcircuits-dot-com usualy proves to be more time and cost effective
than hand building.
