RE: I'm Sold on MMCs and RSGs! - Pics
Thanks for the reply! First off - for anyone interested, I have posted
pictures of both of those things to my web site, the Tesla/HV section can be
found at http://www.rpi.edu/~cleara/other/teslahv.htm, or the main page at
www.rpi.edu/~cleara/ .
Unfortunately, I was unable to do a whole lot of testing last night due to
temperature difficulties :( At what I determined to be the best run, I
achieved only a 4' discharge, which is approximately equivalent to what I
got with a static gap and .02 uf glassmike capacitor. What I blame for that
shortcoming is a strong wind that was blowing across my driveway
continuously. The streamer kind of "waved" - it wasn't as good as the run
inside. The SRSG is running at 120 bps, and I usually run my coil's input
voltage up to 140v. Unfortunately, my amp meter was destroyed from a surge,
but at one point during the night I blew a 20 amp fuse. One difficulty I
have had is that of the SRSG not lining up correctly on each run. Some
times it runs excellently, and sometimes it is downright pathetic! Can I
correct that mid-run with a variac tune - or would that not have enough
range? What I have to do now is keep shutting the gap on and off till I get
a good discharge. I will try to take some more precise measurements without
wind next time I'm home, which unfortunately will be in about 3 weeks. In
the meantime, I think I will work a little on designing a 15KVA transformer
for a core rewind! Thanks,
-Andy C.

Hi Andy,
Fun post to read! Hey, if you get a chance and have at least amp/volt
metering
capabilty, please let us know some final specs, free-air spark lengths, and
volts/amps at those spark lenghts, bps, etc.. whatever you can.
(I agree with the two upgrades you just made. They make a totally
difference coil,
don't they.)
Good luck outside (hint: take some time to tune - start early before it
gets dark).
