Hi All,
This is really amazing, because I have seen in the past two month's I was
gathering info not one coil without a strike rail (if I remember well). I
also was wondering why this seems unanimous on the net.
Pure theoratical the million Volt (or whatever) will be over the primary
coil (or at least part of it). If we suppose it strikes on 'the hotside' (if
of course there is one) of the primary coil this million Volt will be (for a
very short time) also over the MMC's! Of course the power supply will not be
hurt, but I can image that a spike of a million Volt could make a puncture
in one or more MMC's (or whatever tank cap). The cap has also a certain
capacity opposite the earth and therefore no matter wat it could be
punctured I think. Because of the high appparent resistance of the primary
cap there would flow a very small current, but later this could still be a
problem (I think).
I you can notice, I'am very careful in the way a express myself here,
because who can beat plain old experience? I think it comes down to this:
who has a relatif cheap cap or a cap that can easily be repaired and does
not have a strike rail yet and like a little risk, forget about the trike
rail!
