For those of us who believe in using REAL, not SI or metric units, a
Tesla is 10,000 gauss. For reference, a typical value for the earth's
magnetic field is of the order of 1/2 gauss, and some of the new
supermagnets can easily produce fields of more than 10,000 gauss.
As an aside, my apologies to Ruud, who lives in a metric country. My
philosophy is just "don't fix it if it ain't broke"; if you were raised
on metric units by all means use them, much of the world does. If you
were raised on english units, then I think it's just fine to use them.
I have been involved in many sales of radar equipment to countries on
the metric system. They were far less concerned with the system of
units used than they were with having stuff fit!
