Re: Voltage determination

Bart,

To answer your questions,

-The 8X6 coil (a 6-inch stacked on an 8-inch) with just series gaps would
give me 6+ feet in spark length, but my 1/8in tungsten would burn up from the
power, so I switched to a sync RSG. The spark length went down to about 5
feet, but was more consistant, and I could run longer. This was the first
time I stacked the two 8-inch coils. It's a good thing there was no wind -
they were not connected mechanically.

-The old transformer operated at 4KV - the new one is 14.4KV, so I had to
open the gaps on the RSG and add two series gaps. I set them as far as I
could without the firings becoming erratic.

-The top load is a 3-inch X 22-inch toroid made from dryer duct covered in
foil tape.

I'm looking at winding a new 8-inch X 8-ft secondary and building a new RSG
with 1/4in tungsten later this year. The bigger these things get - the more
money you have to throw at them! A 7-inch stick of 1/8-inch tungsten is only
$7.00, A 7-inch stick of 1/4-inch tungsten is $50.00, and not so easy to find!
