At my work we've got several different variacs that I sometimes pick one out
and repair for myself (otherwise they would be thrown away)
and I've seen sevral variacs with the same specs as you have described, the
contact brush sounds OK, but when sanding the wire, don't take off too much,
this will decrease your variacs max amp. usage.
after sanding the contact point of the copper circle, make sure it is well
cleaned to prevent shorting out the thing.
