Hi Bill,
8" does sound like it's too high. I have a 4" coil with a 4x17" toroid.
The center is 2.5" above the winding. My coils seem to work best when
the bottom of the outer portion of the toroid lines up with the top of the
winding. Remember that you will have to retune when you readjust the
toroid.
